Voice over IP (VoIP) Expert
September 2007
Clear as a bell, cost effective and simple. The three simple reasons why businesses nationwide are switching to Voice over IP (VoIP) in record numbers and are cutting their communications costs as much as 30%. Just ask Jeff Rothell, President and CEO of Dallas-based CentricVoice. Founded in 2003, CentricVoice has quickly become one of the largest and fastest growing VoIP providers in the country, offering a comprehensive set of IP-based communication products and services to small, medium, and large businesses. The company provides these services over a network infrastructure that is one ofthe most cost effective and efficient in the industry. Here, Jeff Rothell addresses common questions and misconceptions about VoIP.

Q. How long has Voice Over IP (VoIP) been around?
A.

Believe it or not, VoIP has been around for 11 years. Limited commercial network deployments started in 1998 and larger scale VoIP network deployments began in 1999 and 2000. Unfortunately, the technology hit a speed bump when the telecom market went bust in 2001 and 2002 slowing down the growth and proliferation of VoIP to the consumer and commercial marketplace. Today, VoIP is in full deployment mode with all mainstream communication providers in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia. One litmus test you can use to determine the maturity of VoIP is the hard fact that traditional voice equipment is no longer being manufactured – it’s all VoIP technology now. Manufacturers drive what type of technology gets deployed, which is no different than watching the semiconductor market when forecasting personal PC sales or what new applications can be delivered. Q.

Do you see anything that would lead you to believe there is going to be a significant change in the types of companies offering VoIP services during the next two to five years?

A.

“Yes, and this is occurring now and will grow rapidly during the next 18 months. VoIP is being used by all the major telecom companies, but within their existing and confined infrastructure. Now, and in the future, the next VoIP company will be your local IT shop, computer store, or anyone with a network of customers or agents. VoIP has torn down the boundaries that have constrained telecom for 100 years. As an example, we service local dial tone, long distance and Internet in 27 states and seven countries. There’s no way a large provider can have such a reach without billions of dollars of invested plant. VoIP allows us to leverage the existing investment already deployed by larger carriers to offer those services. A VoIP company’s ability to service your complete telecom needs at a much lower cost is the net effect of this model.” Click here to view the full article.
